Like all other previous expansions Age of empire 3 also offeres two kinds of plays

1) The story/ campaign

2) The skirmishers you vs AI normal games

3) PVP Multiplayer

In order to play multiplayer with other humans and not bot you need to have an active internet connection otherwise you don't need it
